Siguiendo la Calle San Bernardo llegamos a San Antonio de Padua, esta iglesia construida entre los siglos XII y XIII es el edificio más antiguo y mejor conservado de la ciudad. Es un lugar que tienes que ver si o si en Avilés.
Pertenece al convento de los franciscanos, y los miembros de la orden viven en un edificio muy cerca de la iglesia.
Origen de la Iglesia de los Padres Franciscanos
Se trata de un edificio de origen románico que se ha convertido en una joya del patrimonio avilesino. Su importancia está en que es la iglesia que existió en el interior de la muralla durante el periodo medieval.
Se sitúa en un lugar con un gran potencial arqueológico ya que en unas excavaciones se descubrieron restos de un edificio todavía más antiguo y evidencias de enterramientos
En su interior se encuentran los restos del almirante Pedro Menéndez, que nació en la ciudad y pasó a la historia por fundar la primera ciudad de los Estados Unidos de América.
